Comma Space is pleased to present Who Care? 1&2 You & Me (啊 原来如土), the third solo exhibition by pioneering contemporary artist Tang Da Wu at this independent art space.
A foundational figure in Southeast Asian contemporary art, Tang Da Wu is widely recognised for his experimental practice, which spans performance, installation, drawing, and collaborative work. This exhibition continues the trajectory of his critical engagement with the role and responsibility of the artist in society.
Following In Broad Day Light, I Do — Da Wu’s 2024 solo exhibition at Comma Space — this new solo carries his investigation into themes of vulnerability, presence, and the act of artistic creation itself. Where the previous exhibition used mud, a recurring material in Da Wu’s practice, to symbolise both fragility and resilience, Who Care? 1&2 You & Me moves further toward dematerialization and the ephemeral.
At the heart of Who Care? 1&2 You & Me is a central question: What does it mean to care? And perhaps more pressingly — who, indeed, does? This inquiry unfolds through performance and exhibition. Rather than offering fixed meanings, Da Wu invites viewers to experience a space/performance with uncertainty, where care is not prescribed but experienced, negotiated, and questioned in real time.
The exhibition title itself suggests multiplicity and intimacy — You & Me, 1 & 2, care shared or unreciprocated. The Chinese subtitle, 啊 原来如土 (“Ah, so it is just earth after all”), adds a layer of poetic irony, reminding us that everything grand returns to something elemental. This sentiment is mirrored in Da Wu’s use of humble materials and his preference for actions that may disappear as soon as they are enacted.
In an era where spectacle often overshadows sincerity, Tang Da Wu’s work is a quiet but urgent reminder of the artist’s deeper social role: not to entertain or decorate, but to engage, challenge and reveal. Who Care? 1&2 You & Me offers a timely and powerful reflection on art’s capacity to reflect, and perhaps reframe, how we care for ourselves, each other, and the world around us.
