Cunxin Cuntie Cunxin 寸心寸铁寸心 (10/12 SOLO)

Tang Da Wu

【An inch of effort, An inch of metal and An inch of effort】

“Cunxin Cuntie Cunxin 寸心寸铁寸心” is a solo exhibition by artist Tang Da Wu唐大霧. Having started to work with metal since his student days at Central Saint Martins in 1974, Tang is still in favour of heavy uncompromised metal for its danger, risk and hardness. Titled “Cunxin Cuntie Cunxin” – an inch of effort, an inch of metal and an inch of effort – the solo consists of multiple pieces of metals varied in sizes. It is site-specifically conceived with portrait drawings carved directly onto the metal surface with a humble penknife for which the artist did daily during the setting up.

Drawing on the metal’s rawness with a labour of love, Tang refers to his portraits as tribute to the passing of three prominent local visual artists Chng Seok Tin, Juliana Yasin and Lee Wen,. “Cunxin Cuntie Cunxin” reflects Tang’s own envisionment of how the world in 2999, the next millennium, would feel like when materialism dominates our everyday. The realisation of “Cunxin Cuntie Cunxin” in its most un-processed metal rawness at a run-down industrial building, where Comma Space is located, is also aptly casting back on his words: “If art is about beauty, I will not be making art”.

“Cunxin Cuntie Cunxin 寸心寸铁寸心” is the 10th of the 12 SOLO curatorial series by Wang Ruobing organised by Comma Space逗号空间.
